Cape Cod Fly Fishing Guide for Striped Bass on Cape Cod

Cape Cod Fly Fishing Guide & Report May 1st - 8th:

Welcome to Solstice Fly Fishing’s Cape Cod Fly Fishing Guide and Report. Its already May! This means everyday that passes us by more Striped Bass are arriving on Cape Cod.  The water temperature for Cape Cod Bay is about 48 degrees and 49 degrees for Nantucket Sound. We have had a some colder air temperatures and strong winds from the east which kept the water cool. The ideal temperature we want to reach is above 50 degrees for Striped Bass to really start filling in.

Solstice has been out fishing and we have seen striped bass on Cape Cod. They are not in great numbers but enough for you to start getting your gear together. The weather outlook for the coming week doesn’t look that great till about a week from now. We have high winds and lots of rain coming.

The herring are running in fantastic numbers. The herring run counter in Brewster said in the last 7 days there were about 50,000 herring counted. Quite impressive, so if you have a chance to see a herring run in the coming days go check it out!

At the moment, with the herring around and the showing of small bait balls of sand eels, those are going to be your best bet for flies to use on Cape Cod at the moment. A larger herring pattern with a white bottom and dark top will work if presented properly. As for sand eels a small, light colored and flashy pattern seems to be working for the newly arrived striped bass.

REMEMBER: If you haven’t learned about 2015 year class of Striped Bass and how they need to be protected in this months upcoming ASMFC 2023 Spring Meeting, go check out the this link.  Proper catch and release methods are going to be key.
